Inle Lake , a freshwater lake located in the Nyaungshwe Township of Taunggyi District of Shan State, part of Shan Hills in Myanmar (Burma). It is the second largest lake in Myanmar with an estimated surface area of 44.9 square miles (116 km2), and one of the highest at an elevation of 2,900 feet (880 m). During the dry season, the average water depth is 7 feet (2.1 m), with the deepest point being 12 feet (3.7 m), but during the rainy season this can increase by 5 feet (1.5 m).

The watershed area for the lake lies to a large extent to the north and west of the lake. The lake drains through the Nam Pilu or Balu Chaung on its southern end. There is also a hot spring on its northwestern shore.

Inle Lake is in the Shan Hills of Myanmar. At its southwestern edge, Phaung Daw Oo Paya is a tiered pagoda with gilded Buddha statues. In the hills, near the market town of Indein, the stupas of Shwe Inn Dein Pagoda resemble a field of gold spires. The ruined stupas at nearby Nyaung Ohak have been reclaimed by forest. Maing Thauk village is split between land and water, with a wooden bridge connecting the two halves.

Although the lake is not large, it contains a number of endemic species. Over twenty species of snails and nine species of fish are found nowhere else in the world. Some of these, like the silver-blue scaleless Sawbwa barb, the crossbanded dwarf danio, and the Lake Inle danio, are of minor commercial importance for the aquarium trade. It hosts approximately 20,000 brown and black head migratory seagulls in November, December and January.[2]

If you are staying by Inle Lake then you absolutely have to do the long boat tour. The boat ride starts at 7.30 (or earlier if you want to see the sunrise), and then you are taken along the river. As you are going along the river you will visit a floating garden, long neck women, a cigar factory, a steal factory, and many more! At the end of the day you get to see the sunset behind the mountains! It’s a long trip, but totally worth it and is highly recommended on my part.

I’ve created a little video and updated some photos from my trip on the lake. If you want to get a better feel for what the trip is going to be like feel free to check it out at this link: http://www.sophez.com/#!myanmar/c1yws

The link also provides some other good suggestions for things to do while in Myanmar.

This is the review from Sharon Z,…

Everyone said you had to go to Inle Lake on our trip to Myanmar. There was nothing remarkable about it besides the oarsmen and the houses on the shore. I guess the US$ 20 per head that is charged on arriving on a scary bus ride from hell did nothing to endear us. Upon taking a boat tour along the lake there were just “tourist attractions” e.g. handcrafted silver, scarf making using Lilies, markets with HEFTY price tags and a monastery that also had nothing but stalls of the same ilk; it was worth a miss. No need to put yourself through the anguish of the bus ride both to and from this attraction especially if you are afraid of heights. The weather was going up for us, but I wasn’t going to try this journey with rainfall, although we almost had to go on the journey back. Instead, we should go to the beach.
